Appreciating publishers

One of the things I disliked like about working with a publisher is that it took so long to get a book into print.

How long? It wasn’t uncommon for a year to pass between the time I “completed” a manuscript and finally had a book in hand.

And I’m not a patient person in the first place.

This time around I’m doing the work myself, with help from Carol and some friends — artist Sam (Sarah) McFarland, writer Joan Mauch, who was kind enough to read the first draft and make comments.

But the down side of doing it my way — and there is a lot of upside — is all the detail work to get the manuscript ready for distribution, either through Kindle or print.

Maybe there’s a reason it takes a brick-and-mortar publisher a year to turn around a book.
